Tech. Class
This summer I took a technology course at OISE. In this post, I would like to highlight some of my key-learnings that I hope ot carry into my teaching:
Google Forms
Google Forms has so much potential. A teacher can use it to create quizzes, polls, self-assessments, surveys... or take a more creative spin on it! I have seen Escape Rooms created with Google Forms.
I also want to try organizing scavenger hunts with Google Forms. I am thinking along the lines of "use this Pinterest board to answer questions on this page and unlock your next challenge!"
Such fun activities can re-shape our perception of doing research (tedious --> exciting).
PS: in technology, there is a system that helps appraise the piece of tech. The evaluation system is called the SAMR model. It identifies whether the piece of technology merely substitutes something that already exists or if it creates new unthought-of functions & possibilities. In terms of the SAMR model, I think Google Forms deserves the highest rating.

FlipGrid
Flipgrid is a video-recording app where students can respond to a teacher's prompt as well as react to one another's videos. This app has been used for ice-breaker/introduction activities, data collection & research, language learning, self-assessment, and more. Flipgrid allows for every voice to be heard and is augmented with video-editing features (e.g., close captions, filters, stickers).
As a music teacher, I would like to use FlipGrid to monitor my students' progress in their weekly practicing. My students could also submit their playing tests via Flipgrid if they are too nervous to do it in person. Flipgrid can also be used for presentations - this is especially convenient if class time is restricted.
NB: Always make sure that the website you are intending to use is vetted by your school board. Be sure to inform parents about your intention of using student-created data for educational purposes and receive their permission. Be certain that all students have access to technology to complete your assignments. Teach your students about online ethics before using such an application to prevent online-bullying.

Additionally, below are some characteristics of responsibele media user and content producer:

Scratch + Makey Makey
Scratch is a simplified coding software that allows children to explore the basics of coding by making their own games and storyboards.
Scratch couples well with Makey Makey. Students can design original games coded in Scratch and operated with Makey Makey keys. I would like my future students to create their own digital instruments with Makey Makey and Scratch.
Furthermore, Makey Makey can be a good piece of assistive technology for music class in the situation when a student struggles with fine-motor skills. Larger keys can allow that student to participate in music-making along with the class.
